about

Montreal’s dark pearl Thus Owls is releasing their fourth full-length album The Mountain That We Live Upon on September 28th. Nine tracks, composed for four guitars, drums and voice, that questions creation from an artistic as well as a biological point of view. What does motherhood, parenthood and artistry mean and what happens in the wake of our choices? From a jazz-oriented, avant-garde rock with chanted poetry, one version and one reality takes shape. The unmistakable sound of Erika and Simon Angell carries and brings forward this larger version of Thus Owls into a dynamic, open and free sound where love stands undoubted.

For their fourth full-length album Thus Owls has collaborated with a six-piece large band. The core trio of Erika, Simon and drummer Samuel Joly (Marie-Pierre Arthur, Fred Fortin), is surrounded by three additional guitar players; Laurel Sprengelmeyer (Little Scream), Nicolas Basque (Plants and Animals) and Michael Feuerstack (The Luyas). The record also features Marc-André Landry (Matt Holubowski) on bass, Jason Sharp on bass saxophone and Emil Strandberg from Sweden on trumpet. The full band was recorded live off the floor, at Hotel2Tango in Montreal, to capture the passion that exists in their powerful and dynamic live performances. The new album will be the first release on Erika and Simon’s new independent label and artistic home; For The Living And The Dead.

Track Name: A Shade Of Green
A Shade Of Green
Lyrics by Erika Angell

There is love for you within me that is sleeping
A shade of green that you don't know yet
Your heart a torn that's how you keep it

Oh I thought I could love you out of it

Burnt our feathers, burnt our faith
But from the ashes rise a phoenix
I won't ask no more and I will ask again
Until the sky makes you believe it

Oh I thought I could love you out of it

Would you hold it?
Would you hold it?
When rivers don't run here no more
When trees are gone and the rock lays raw
Track Name: Future/Past
In my dreams I am dying
The birds are leaving my caved in chest
I know all colours by heart now
My voice is traveling freed in space

You are in my future
You are in my past

No one knows how old this pain is
Blazing within me, like a memory of mine
I grow younger in it's pale light
The love it takes to grow a life

I am in your future
I am in your past

He takes me in to take me out
He holds me up to bring me down
Oh, and I suck it up and I soak it in
leaving you to deal with it to deal with him
One by one you seize the fires
As they come rolling of her tongue
Cause always is how he believes
Leaves a rumble up her spine
It's in a plague that she creates
Bleeding out on paper
Hole by hole she shapes the truth
Into a darker blend to sing to
Making her high like towers and tight as fists
And after low and shallow, low and shallow

He takes me in to take me out
He holds me up to bring me down
I suck it up and I soak it in
Leaving you to deal with it, to deal with him

In my dreams I am dying
The birds are leaving my caved in chest
Track Name: Ashore
On each side of one sentence
Awaiting each other
All I want is
What you want love
All said
All held
All of you

Give me the voice to take it away
Give me the words to take it away
The mute and the broken that leave us in pain
Take it away

There's too much hollow
Threatening to swallow
What's pure and brave in us
Hold my head love
While I hold yours
Above
Away
Ashore

Give me the voice to take it away
Give me the words to take it away
The mute and the broken that leave us in pain
Take it away

When you wake up in the morning
I know the dreams you had were blue
When you ask me if I love you
I know the birds are haunting you
When you stop yourself from leaving
I know how bad you want to

Give me the voice to take it away
Give me the words to take it away
The mute and the broken that leave us in pain
Take it away
Track Name: Solar Eclipse
(Below lyrics written by Erika Angell)

I made the choice to lose myself within another
To sacrifice my own devotion
quietly hoping I could have it both ways
A solar eclipse
A hidden path
A gamble to which there is no regret
They say you just don't
and I believe them
But what if it's not that you don't
but because you won't, you won't, you won't.

(Below lyrics are put together by extracted phrases written by Sappho, translated by Anne Carson from "If Not, Winter".

I would not think to touch the sky with two arms.
I don't know what to do
Two states of mind within me
You came and I was crazy for you
And you cooled my mind that burned with longing
Evening, you gather back all that
Dazzling dawn has put asunder
You gather a lamb you gather a kid
You gather a child to it's mother
Of all stars the most beautiful one
Someone will remember us I say
Even in another time.
And on the eyes black sleep of night
Mingled with all kinds of colours
And I on a soft pillow will lay down my limbs
With sweet oil, costly, you anointed yourself
And on a soft bed, you would let loose your longing
And neither any, nor any holy place
Was there from which we were absent

No groove
No dance
No sound

Just because you won't, you won't, you won't.
Track Name: Vessel
You are coming at me
With sparrows in your eyes
What does it take to have her
In the morning or at night?

Naked and then naked
Everything is taken
Layers of the union
Peeled and ripped away
Starved and drained to the teeth
It's too much it can't be given
From the rock bottom

Without weight
A muted vessel in the dark
Strangely unaffected
Was I robbed or did I let them all?
At least it was expected
The body
Neon lit and female

It's what I saw
It's what they said
Everybody looks the other way
Track Name: Devils In The Dark
Give me rain
Give me night
Give me rain
Give me night
There's devils in the dark
There's devils in the dark

Held in bed
Held in heart
Held in bed
Held in heart
There's devils in the dark
There's devils in the dark

You won't see her again, again, again
You won't see her again, again, again

She's my everything
I told you that
It didn't end well you left and came
I tried some new things
But thoughts won't talk
And nothing will be written

It breaks my heart now
And it mends it too
Over and over it breaks and heals
Like a breaking wave
Or like night and day
Over and over it breaks and heals

It will be enough
It will be enough

Oh, the growing and the dying
Oh, the believing and the lying
Show me what you've got

Oh, the loving and the losing
Oh, the hopes and the delusions
Show me what you've got

He said; repetition is addiction
The kick, the lick, the fix
A single ride, a one way ticket
Oh, show me what you've got

Don't go digging where there's been digging
Find your own fucking holes
And your own cutting pain
Oh, show me what you've got

It will be enough
It will be enough
Track Name: Shadows
I was born to be a rock
I was born to transform
But only in the dark
Where you will never know me
But only in the dark
Changing one shape for another
We might be
Very lonely
We might both be
Very lonely
Due to who we are
Due to who we are
Track Name: Take Me Over
How I did resist it
To let go of what I know
Now I am falling
With no perception of the ground

I let myself go
I let myself go
I let it take me over

I wash my heart and mind
Clean from expectations
Feed me knowledge
Feed me strength
Love and appreciation

So I don't fear
So I don't fear
Who I might be tomorrow

You're a feather
You're a stone
And I will follow
All is new and all is old
And I will follow
My bones moved with the mountains
Underneath the animals come out to feed
All is blue and all is green
Your eyes the lakes for skies to swallow
And I will follow
To read to please my love
To feed your need my love
You're a feather
You're a stone
Track Name: My Blood
I saw winter die in spring
the faded days awoken
Ripped apart
from the pelvis to my heart
for something larger

They left and they returned
The singing dreamers
In shiny armour
Life burning in their vision
Like engines
Pushing further

I longed to follow them
I longed to live like them

But in my arms
In my arms
Holding you
Holding me
My blood
Always
